A word about the work

In 1988, Jorge Donn, Maurice Béjart’s Art Director, cut loose and formed his own dance troupe, Europa Ballet. Jorge commissioned Martine to produce a reportage during the Creusot Theatre art residency, where the troupe was rehearsing. The work was shown at an exhibition to mark the end of the residency. This image of a training session is from that work.

I loved doing this work. I love dance, and sometimes I couldn’t help dancing myself during rehearsals. Jorge is a real character and the way the group welcomed me was exceptional.

Was there a place for a dance photo in the gallery ? I didn’t spend long wondering. Both worlds resemble each other in many ways. Great dancers are high level sports people, very high level even, and they take even greater care with their preparation and endless rehearsal of gestures and movements than the most accomplished athletes.
