A gallery devoted to sport without a single image of Gareth Edwards, the greatest player in the history of rugby, was inconceivable.
I just had to find the golden nugget. Here it is. A souvenir that was exhumed from a faded issue of Miroir du Rugby, that had been read and reread until it almost totally disintegrated.
This photo really made its mark on me when I was still a young (junior) player, I played for my high school, l’Ermitage (where I was a boarder) during the week and Coulommiers rugby club on Sundays.
Only two matches a week when I wanted to play thousands… I was half-scrum, he was too. I admired him, worshipped him. He was the only player in the world that I could see score against France without it being painful.
Later on, during my years with L’Équipe, I became interested in Gerry Cranham’s work and finding out that he was the author of this photo was very moving.
