Hauraki

A word about the work

PGRI005
Auckland Bay, 14th October 2002.
America’s Cup, FRA69, one of France’s Défi Areva’s boats during a regatta against Dennis Conner’s Stars and Stripes.
Benoit Baume, who was in charge of all the editorial production for Défi Français, wanted to add a different viewpoint to the photographic work by sailing specialists. By using a photographer who would tell the behind-the-scenes story of Défi differently, and who would bring his own style to the coverage of the competition. He called on Patrick Gripe.

Benoit Baume’s account :
Patrick Gripe knew nothing about this world but was interested in and passionate about it from the outset. He was very sensitive to the majesty of the place, Hauraki Bay in Auckland, and had rapidly taken stock of the scope of the event. He was inspired by the incredible atmosphere surrounding the races in New Zealand, an island on which sailing is a major sport.

Jean-Denis’s choice

It is unusual in a photograph by Patrick Gripe for the human element to be absent, or invisible. But it is a success. A simple image that takes you on a journey.
