A word about the work
GRAN007
2003, Tony Parker had just won his first NBA title with the San Antonio Spurs and was about to play in the European Basketball Championship for the French national team. Their only aim was to win the title but they lost in the semi-finals. The team was led by Tony Parker and included Boris Diaw and Florent Pietrus who helped France win the Euro ten years later in 2013.
This image comes from a series produced for L’Équipe magazine in Gérard Rancinan’s studio in Ivry, France.
It was great. He was still young at 21 and came along with his two brothers, TJ and Pierre, as well as his mother. He loved the place. He was interested in the technical side, the lights, framing etc. You could tell he had a real appetite for discovery and learning.
Jean-Denis’s choice
It is a simple image but when you know Tony Parker’s mad passion for the sport, it sums it all up.
By standing with his back to us, he doesn’t steal the ball’s limelight and yet it is so obviously him. Pared down and highly efficient.
